How can we streamline the creation of individual offers for complex technical products? (Especially if we want engineers to manage the rules themselves without involving programmers).
about the project

Personalization of HVAC products:
configuration system

VBW Engineering is a leading Polish manufacturer of ventilation and air conditioning units (HVAC industry), operating on the market for over 25 years.

VBW devices can be found in over 30 countries in a variety of facilities - from office buildings, hotels, and schools, through production halls, to demanding facilities such as hospitals, laboratories, and swimming pools. They ensure thermal comfort and air quality inside buildings.

In order to streamline the process of creating individual offers, VBW Engineering has partnered with EXSO.

Project objective: to accelerate the full customization of air handling units by adapting their size, equipment, components, and finish to project requirements, as well as to free up the working time of technical and sales advisors in Poland.

Project result: the EXSO Offers system for configuring air handling units, developed and implemented by EXSO in collaboration with VBW. This system supports design flexibility while maintaining engineering standards in the field of design and technical documentation, and also provides impressive 3D/2D visualizations of the project.

CHALLENGE

Cascading effect: how parameters shape dimensions and costs

Computational complexity

One of the major challenges that arose in the project was the issue of dynamically determining the dimensions of each section of the device, which translates into the shape and size of the entire control panel. In addition, all dimensional changes must comply with complex rules of correctness and, ultimately, translate into the dimensions of the sections and sheet metal formats used to manufacture these very complex and costly devices.

Changing a single operating parameter (for example, the supply air temperature by just 1°C) may require recalculation of each program function.
As a result, the device components may change, which in turn will translate into a change in the overall dimensions of the entire unit.
Process

Creating complex IT systems with EXSO is not just about programming

step 1
Strategic analysis with key decision makers

We conduct intensive sessions with sales, operations, and technology leaders to quickly build the foundation of the system. We analyze current processes and long-term business goals.

step 3
Practice-oriented prototype

We launch the test system as quickly as possible to gather feedback and train users, then configure it, feed it with data, and deploy it in the production environment.

step 2
Precise implementation

We feed data into the system and configure its parameters to suit the specific nature of the company's processes. We create dedicated modules corresponding to unique business processes.

step 4
Preparation of technical documentation and development

We ensure the possibility of further development of the jointly created solution through documentation of the adopted assumptions and technical solutions.

solutions

4 pillars of the air handling unit configuration system

1. Comprehensive design
‍The proposed
solution supports the process of configuring control units, from determining input parameters to selecting the model and air processing components.

2. 3D visualization and calculation of performance parameters
‍As
a result of the selection function calculations, the system determines the intermediate parameters. The final result is a fully defined unit, which can be viewed as a 3D model on screen, in print, or in a DXF file.

All output performance parameters are calculated for such a unit, including noise, power, weight, and price.

‍3. Automatic production documentation
For the needs of the production department, the following are created: assembly and electrical diagrams, detailed material specifications with exact dimensions of individual profiles and formats, and a list of purchased components.

4. Knowledge transfer and team competence development

The client's specialists working with the EXSO team expanded their engineering skills with knowledge of data structures.
They mastered the basics of function and script programming, transforming themselves into advanced users-"programmers" of this non-standard system.

Technologies used in the project:

The VBW platform is a flexible engineering platform for independently defining products and calculation rules.

EXSO has designed a solution that puts full control of the system logic in the hands of VBW Engineering engineers. They can independently define products, parameters, and calculation formulas, modifying them in real time without the help of programmers.

Advanced EXSO+ modules provide exceptional flexibility thanks to built-in mechanisms. Extensions, parameters, user tables, and Groovy scripts compiled in real time allow business rules to be adapted on an ongoing basis to changing technical and market requirements —without the need to rebuild the system.
